A free press for a free people
A handful of billionaires own most of Britain’s national press. Nobody elected them. The Media Freedom Act would change that.
What the Act does:
Media owners must be legal UK residents.
Frees media ownership from domination by billionaires and corporations.
Maximum ownership share of a national media outlet for one individual/family shall be 20%.
Companies can only own one national media outlet.
Distributes media ownership across society, with a levy on social media billionaires to fund local, independent, and cooperatively owned media.
UK media must be members of a press-abuse complaints authority independent of government and owners.
Requires think tanks covered by the media to disclose donations in real time.
The public is with us
63% back a ban on national media being owned by foreign-based individuals or foreign-owned companies. 15% oppose it.
Every party. On every measure we polled, support outweighs opposition among every party’s voters.
32,234 people signed the petition for the Act, from every one of the UK’s 650 constituencies.
Public support isn’t the problem. The ownership is.
